Same-Sex Wedding Etiquette

May 6, 2026

Same-sex weddings follow many of the same etiquette rules as any wedding, with a few special considerations. Learn how to plan an inclusive and respectful celebration.

Planning a same-sex wedding is not vastly different from any other wedding. The same principles of respect, communication, and celebration apply. However, some traditional terms and roles may need adjustment. Instead of "bride" and "groom," use "couple" or refer to each partner by name. For titles like "maid of honor" or "best man," feel free to use gender-neutral alternatives like "honor attendant" or "person of honor." Some couples choose to have both partners walk down the aisle, either together or with their respective parents. Others prefer one partner to wait at the altar. There is no wrong choice. When it comes to pre-wedding events like showers, both families can host together or separately. Gift registries work the same as for any couple. Regarding invitations, list both names equally. Use "together with their families" instead of traditional parent phrasing. The key is to focus on celebrating your unique love story, not on following outdated rules.
