How to Handle Wedding Plus Ones
May 6, 2026
Deciding who gets a plus one can be stressful. Learn the standard etiquette rules for inviting additional guests to your wedding.
One of the most common etiquette questions couples face is who should receive a plus one. The general rule is that married, engaged, and cohabiting couples should both be invited by name. For single guests, you have more flexibility. A good guideline is to offer plus ones to members of your wedding party, guests traveling from out of town, and those who will not know many other people at the event. This makes them feel more comfortable. If your budget is tight, it is acceptable to limit plus ones. However, be consistent. Do not give one cousin a plus one while denying another in a similar situation. On the invitation, address the envelope clearly. For a single guest with a plus one, write "Mr. John Smith and Guest." For a known couple, write both names, such as "Ms. Jane Doe and Mr. Tom Brown." If you cannot accommodate a guest's request for a plus one, politely explain that your guest list is limited. Most reasonable people will understand.
